Yellow Journalism?What’s that?

with one comment

Hmm..Yellow journalism is a journalism that take roles in exploitation and exaggeration of distorted news, stories and misleading images to gain attractions from the public. In 1835,the American publisher,James Gordon Bennett was the first person who introduce sensationalism in news stories. The term ‘yellow journalism’ was used on the news presentation around the 1890s.The yellow journalism was used by Hearst and Pulitzer to sell more papers and at the same time stirred up a war fever amongst the American public. They played their(the Americans) emotions on undocumented stories or news.

U.S.S. Maine is an example of the yellow journalism. It is a Spanish-American War(21 April to 13 August 1898),a turning point in the history of US.It resulted in the starvation and death of over 100,000 Cubans.Outrage in many sectors of American public, fill by stories in the ‘Yellow Press’ put pressure on Presidents to end the fighting in Cuba.

Many of these yellow journalism’s innovations, such as banner headlines, sensational stories, plentiful illustrations and color supplements have become a permanent feature of newspapers today.

  1. I wonder what interest America have in Cuba, as they have a lot of conflict throughout history.
